Covid-19

Billions of people across Planet Earth have been affected by Covid-19 directly or indirectly. There has been a lot of grief about premature death and anxiety about the ability to collectively organise and effectively treat people with serious adverse reactions to infection. The financial fragility of many people in developed countries such as the US has been exposed to the greatest extent in a decade (in the US food banks are being accessed by millions; research referred to by USDA indicated that in 2017 15 million households were 'food insecure'). There will be increased poverty in developing countries. Modern medicine does not mean that there isn't a battle with disease and C-19 has brought that battle into sharp relief; until a new vaccine is developed the main way to attempt to save the lives of the most vulnerable patients is the use of a mechanical ventilator. What is within our control that improves our situation during such a pandemic? There has been widespread emphasis on social distancing and hand washing which is to be applauded but clearly we are also in charge of how we treat our bodies although not our genes. Throughout our lives our bodies have to fight off many invasive organisms and diseases; what we can control is our state of mind, our diet and exercise. There is so much variety in the genotype that there isn't a one size fits all approach but that doesn't mean we don't face critical choices about how to live. Once the immediate crisis fades there will also be choices about how we use technology to organise our lives that could be seen in a new perspective. I wonder if there will be political ramifications:how well organised are we collectively? Is our society inclusive enough and if not are we more uncomfortable about that fact?
