Clearly we all have internal narratives. We make sense of our lives by writing plots for our lives. The number of influences on these narratives is phenomenal particularly because we live in a globalized connected world. However many of the sources for the narrative are personal from family and cultural. For some people these sources might be creating a narrative with which they are very content, for others these sources can be extremely self-limiting if not outright harmful. Those sources might be proving an assumption that our work success will be limited. Those sources might be dictating where and how we live. Those sources might be adversely influencing how we interact with others. My contention is that we should clear our minds of preconceptions to the greatest extent possible before setting goals,. Having said that you might decide there are some insights and values such as respect for self and others that can be carried forward like mental wealth.
